02:18 target need to work hand in hand
02:30 be clear about what the sources most organizations have
02:40 and then frequency

Script

00:10 hi my name is Eric Olsen today’s
00:13 whiteboard video is on key performance
00:14 indicators or KPIs for short KPIs are
00:19 those things that are associated with
00:22 you’re calling them those elements of
00:24 your plan that are the expressions of
00:26 what you want to achieve by when those
00:32 KPIs answer the quantifiable piece of
00:36 your goals and objectives
00:37 they come in three different flavors so
00:39 we’ll talk about that in just a minute
00:40 but before we do putting great KPIs
00:44 together and making sure they work well
00:46 for you you need to have these four
00:48 attributes and before I talk about those
00:50 four attributes so I just want to say
00:51 the reason they need to work well for
00:53 you is because KPIs are the heartbeat of
00:58 tell you whether you’re making progress
01:01 against our strategy so KPIs are the
01:04 thing that do that for us so you’re
01:06 going to live with them a lot so let’s
01:08 make sure they’re really good okay so
01:10 the four things you need to have in
01:12 order to make sure your KPIs work for
01:14 you are number one is your measure so
01:17 the measure is the verbal expression
01:20 very simply in words of what are we
01:23 straightforward the tricky thing is is
01:26 we need to be as expressive as we
01:28 possibly can with our measures so number
01:30 of new customers that’s fine there’s
01:32 nothing wrong with that but a little bit
01:37 would be number of new customers this
01:38 year or number of new customers for a
01:44 what is it is it yeah so what is it so
01:46 we’re really clear and when it comes to
01:48 have measuring it on a monthly basis
01:49 you’re going to want to be as clear as
01:53 let’s say this year number two is our
01:59 that we want to achieve so a couple
02:00 things that are important about this is
02:02 the target needs to be apples to apples
02:05 with when the goal date is is set or the
02:08 due date is set so we want to achieve a
02:11 summers by the end of the year so the
02:14 due date in the target work hand in hand
02:16 the other thing is the measure in the
02:18 target need to work hand in hand so it’s
02:20 a number so this is a number this is a
02:22 percentage just as a percentage you get
02:24 the idea
02:25 third thing we actually run a report on
02:28 this data so where’s it coming from
02:30 be clear about what the sources most
02:34 sources fragmented systems so making
02:37 sure you identify where this data is
02:38 coming from will save you a lot of time
02:40 and then frequency so how often are you
02:44 going to be reporting on this KPI
02:49 reviews to report on the progress of
02:50 your plan at least monthly in which case
02:53 we’d like to see monthly KPIs so you got
02:56 to be able to pull the data monthly in
02:57 order to make that happen that’s not
02:58 always possible but let’s try to get
03:01 weekly and others are daily monthly is a
03:07 so now we know the components that we
03:10 our KPIs here are some different types
03:12 of KPIs that you might think about as
03:14 you’re putting your plan together so
03:17 there are just straight-up rod numbers
03:21 nothing wrong with widget counting they
03:22 don’t necessarily tell a story and I’ll
03:24 talk about how to make this tell a story
03:26 in a minute but this is just simply
03:28 widget counting number of things the
03:31 second thing is progress so this is
03:33 really often used it’s great we use this
03:41 complete of a project whatever it might
03:43 be is a project type measure it’s a good
03:46 measure if if you don’t have
03:48 quantifiable measures or you can’t get
03:49 the data and you just want to track the
03:51 performance of the goal as it relates
03:53 that action is being completed under it
03:56 the third type of indicator is a change
04:00 type indicator like percent increase in
04:02 sales making this better would be
04:07 last year and the idea is 22 percent so
04:11 you can see how that starts to be more
04:12 expressive and work with the target so
04:15 this starts to tell a little bit more of
04:16 a story than this one does right and if
04:20 you
04:22 measures tell more of a story like this
04:24 one does you might change something like
04:31 so that’s an example okay so now we know
04:35 what we have to have in place and kind
04:37 of different types of measures to get
04:38 our ideas flowing let’s talk about one
04:41 thing that you might take your measure
04:43 writing to a next level and that is
04:45 think about the fact that there are
04:48 leading and lagging measures so we’re
04:52 percent increase in sales or sales is a
04:55 lagging indicator it occurred it’s an
04:57 outcome if you want to make sure that
04:59 you’re on track you might have a KPI in
05:01 place which is telling us whether we’re
05:03 going to hit that increase such as your
05:08 size of your pipeline so we don’t want
05:13 we do want to make sure we have a
05:16 measures when we’re looking at our
05:18 performance on a monthly basis so with
05:21 that so we have for today hopefully you
05:23 have what you need to write create KPIs
05:28 and don’t forget subscribe to our
