1. A survey has found which countries’ foods are the most popular around the world. British research company YouGov asked over 25,000 people in 24 countries which of 34 types of cuisine they had tried, and if they liked it or disliked it.

2. It found that Italian cuisine, such as pizza and pasta, was the most popular food around the world, with an average of 84% of people across all countries saying they liked it “a lot” or “a fair amount.”

(1)What’s your favorite foreign cuisine? Do you like it more than your country’s food?

(2)Do you enjoy trying the local food when you travel?

3. Chinese cuisine was second most popular, with an average of 78% of people saying they liked it, and Japanese food was third, at 71%. Next were Thai and French food, both at 70%. The least popular cuisine on the list was that of Peru, which only 32% of people said they enjoyed. The next least popular foods were Finnish and Saudi Arabian.

4. Most people preferred the cuisine of their own country. For example, 99% of Italians said they liked Italian cuisine — with 93% saying they liked it “a lot” — and 98% of Spanish people said they liked Spanish food. And even though it wasn’t popular in other countries, 94% of Finnish people still liked Finnish cuisine.

(1)Have you tried Peruvian, Finnish, or Saudi Arabian food? Did you like it?
(2)What foods from your country would you recommend trying?
5. But in a few countries, food from other nations was actually more popular than the local cuisine. In Germany, Denmark and Australia, more people said they liked Italian food than their own cuisine.

6. And in Norway, the most popular food was Mexican, Italian was second, and Norwegian food was tied with Spanish for third. Out of the 24 countries surveyed, people in Japan were the least likely to say they liked foreign foods.

(1)What are your thoughts on the findings of YouGov’s survey?

(2)Why do you think Italian food is so popular around the world?
(3)If you could eat only one dish for the rest of your life, what would it be?
