1. Have you ever played the board game Monopoly and imagined spending the fake money in real shops and cafes? Soon people in Australia will be able to do just that, winning and spending Monopoly money at the Monopoly Dreams Melbourne indoor theme park.

2. US toy and games company Hasbro plans to open the park at Melbourne Central shopping mall in September. It will be the world’s second Monopoly Dreams theme park. The first opened in Hong Kong in 2019 — and the Melbourne park promises to be even bigger.

3. Once inside, guests can enter Mr. Monopoly’s mansion and try to get to his diamond, try to steal from the bank and get sent to jail in Monopoly City, play games to win Monopoly money, and see shows in the “4D” theater.

Tickets will cost from about $20, Time Out said. The board game was first sold under the name Monopoly in the United States in 1933. Players buy properties, build houses and hotels, and get rent from other players. They try to buy groups of properties to create “monopolies” that helps them win the game.

5. A similar game, The Landlord’s Game, was sold from 1906. Creator Elizabeth Magie wanted to teach people about housing and economic problems in the United States. The patent for Monopoly was sold in 1935 to Parker Brothers, a toy and games company. Hasbro took over Parker Brothers in 1991.

6. By 1999, Monopoly was the world’s most popular board game, having been played by an estimated 500 million people, Guinness World Records said.

7. Many themed Monopoly sets have been made for different countries and cities around the world. There have also been themed sets for fans of things like cycling, Pokémon, RobloxThe Lord of the Rings, Barbie and more.
