1. Joe Biden and Donald Trump — the two oldest US presidents to ever take office — are likely to take part in the next presidential election. However, a new survey has found that most Americans want an age limit for elections — and that would stop both 80-year-old Biden and 77-year-old Trump from becoming president again.

2. In the CBS News/YouGov survey, 77% of 2,335 Americans agreed with the idea of an upper age limit for politicians such as the president and senators.

3. Although a US president must be at least 35 years old and a senator must be at least 30 years old, there is no upper age limit for either post.

4. According to Pew Research, about one-third of the 100 members of the Senate are over 70 years old, and four of them are over 80 years old. But in the survey, 75% of those who wanted an age limit said that the limit should be 70 years old or younger.

5. More than 50% of people said the jobs of president and senator are “too demanding” for someone over 75 years old.

6. And although more than two-thirds of people agree that politicians over 75 years old “have helpful experience,” 80% said they could be “out of touch.”

Are there many politicians over 70 in your country’s government?

7. Support for an age limit is highest among people over 65 years old, at 78%. But the survey found that there wasn’t that much difference in support for an age limit among people of different age groups or political views.

8. An earlier YouGov survey found 76% of Americans also want mental competence tests for politicians over 75 years old.
