A previously unknown self-portrait of Vincent Van Gogh has been found behind another of the artist’s paintings, the National Galleries of Scotland has announced.

The self-portrait was found on the back of Van Gogh’s Head of a Peasant Woman when experts took an X-ray of the canvas while preparing it for an exhibit at the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh.

3. The self-portrait is believed to have been hidden for over a 100 years covered by glue and cardboard when it was put in a frame in the early 20th century. Van Gogh was known for turning canvases around and painting on the other side to save money.

The recently found portrait shows a man wearing a hat, and experts said it was immediately clear that the man was Van Gogh, but early in his career. The man in the portrait has a left ear, and Van Gogh cut his off in 1888.

Frances Fowle from the National Galleries of Scotland said that finding the portrait was really exciting. “We have discovered an unknown work by Vincent Van Gogh, one of the most important and popular artists in the world,” she said.

The gallery said experts are looking for a way to take off the glue and cardboard covering the self-portrait without damaging Head of a Peasant Woman. For now, an X-ray picture of the self-portrait will be included in the new exhibit at the Scottish National Gallery. The exhibit, “A Taste for Impressionism,” takes place from July 30 to November 13, 2022.
