Sales of low-alcohol and non-alcoholic versions of drinks like beer and types of liquor are growing, according to a report by British drinks industry research firm, IWSR.

The report showed that the value of low-alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks increased from $7.8 billion in 2018 to nearly $10 billion in 2021 in 10 countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, South Africa, Spain, the UK and the US.

3. In a different report published in 2021, the IWSR said it expects the consumption of non-alcoholic drinks to increase by 31% by 2024 in the same countries.

Charity Drinkaware describes an alcohol-free drink as having less than 0.5% alcohol by volume (ABV), while it says a low-alcohol drink has no more than 1.2% ABV.

Major drinks companies like Heineken and Diageo, which makes Guinness, have released alcohol-free versions of their drinks. However, co-founder of ABV Technology, Ben Jordan said these were difficult to find when he was a student.

Jordan’s company sells and rents machines to businesses in the US to take the alcohol out of beer. Speaking with CNN, he explained that he liked to go to parties when he was a student but didn’t want the effects of alcohol.
