1. Honda has announced a new three-wheeled electric scooter that it hopes will improve balance and reduce falls compared to two-wheeled e-scooters.

2. Named Striemo, the scooter has been developed by a company of the same name, which is supported by Honda. According to Honda, the Striemo is built to allow riders to balance even when moving at low speeds, as well as to travel over uneven ground.

(1)What are your thoughts on the Striemo?

(2)Why do you think e-scooters have become so popular in recent years?

3. The three-wheeled scooter will be released in Japan before the end of 2022, and in Europe and the US in 2023. Three hundred vehicles were made available to Japanese customers in June, with each costing 260,000 yen, or around $1,900.

4. E-scooters have become more and more popular in towns and cities around the world. But as their use has increased, so have accidents. According to Kyodo News, in Tokyo, between January and November 2021 there were 16 e-scooter accidents. In May that year, a man in Osaka was arrested after knocking a woman to the ground while riding an e-scooter.

(1)Have you thought about getting an e-scooter?
(2)Do you think people should be required to have a license to ride an e-scooter?
5. In April 2022, the Japanese government announced that it would be relaxing rules for e-scooters that have a top speed of 20 kilometers per hour. By May 2024, licenses and helmets will not be needed to ride these scooters, and they will be allowed on sidewalks if they don’t move faster than 6 kilometers per hour.

6. However, the Striemo has a top speed of 25 kilometers per hour, and can travel up to 30 kilometers on a single charge. It will still need to be used on the road, and will require a license.
