Getting a Pet
Michelle has lived in a small house by herself for two years. She sometimes felt a little lonely, so she had been thinking about getting a pet. Last year, her neighbor’s dog had five puppies, and he was looking for people to give them homes. Michelle went to her neighbor’s house to see the puppies. She really liked a small, brown one, and she decided to name him Albert. A few weeks later, when Albert was old enough, she ( 26 ). After that, she really enjoyed taking him for walks and playing with him at parks on the weekends.
However, Michelle later realized how hard it was to look after a pet. She often did not know what to do or how to help him. She soon started ( 27 ). She thinks they are very helpful because they have a lot of information she needs. Michelle hopes that doing this will help her become a good dog owner.
Underwater National Park
In the United States, there is a special park called Dry Tortugas National Park. Although it has a few small islands, 99 percent of the 262-square kilometer park is under the ocean. It has one of the largest coral reefs* in the world, and many rare types of sharks, turtles, and other animals live and have their babies there. As a national park, Dry Tortugas ( 28 ). First, it gives people the chance to see a unique environment. Second, it protects the animals and plants in the area, and third, it gives scientists a place to study these animals and plants.
Every year, about 63,000 people visit the park. However, the park is ( 29 ). There are no roads, so people must access it by plane, ferry, or boat. Ferries and boats can damage the coral and underwater environment when they drop their heavy anchors* to the ocean floor. Therefore, the park has special wood platforms where people can tie their boats instead. Once they are at the park, visitors can enjoy activities like swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. The only people living in the park are rangers, who protect and study the environment there. They stop people from fishing in the wrong areas or killing animals. They also help scientists to study the environment. Rangers put tags on birds and fish to see how they live, and they record lots of information about the coral reef. By learning ( 30 ), rangers and scientists hope to protect this unique environment for the future.

I really miss Japan a lot, and I’ve been writing on my website about the great time that I had. In fact, my Japanese teacher at my high school has asked me to tell the class about my stay in Japan.
