1. Mexico’s president shared what he said was a photo of a mythical woodland elf that he claimed provided evidence of the existence of mischievous Mayan spirits.President Andrés Manuel López Obrador posted a photo to his social media accounts that he claimed showed an “alux” from ancient folklore.

2. The grainy photo, which appears to have been taken at night, shows an indistinct creature in a tree. With two bright white eyes and long hair or a headdress, it stares down at the camera. The president suggested the creature resembled a sculpture from an archaeological site on the Yucatan peninsula.

3. He said the photo had been taken three days earlier by an engineer on the construction site of a new railway line known as the Tren Maya, which will connect tourist destinations, including ancient Mayan sites. “It appears to be an alux,” the Leftist friend of Jeremy Corbyn wrote, adding that “everything is mystical”.

Are there any popular myths similar to this in Japan? What are they? Do you or did anyone in your family friends believe in them?

4. There are some cryptozoologists that believe the Mayan little person or Alux was actually or perhaps still is a little person. Aluxob or Alux is the Mayan word given to mythological Mayan spírits found in the Yucatan Peninsula they are believed to be small dwarf-like creatures, that average around 3 foot tall, and they are somewhat akin to goblins, elves or even perhaps poltergeists or golem due to their creation by the owner of the land they settle on.

5. Created in the form of highly detailed clay figures. Shamans can cast ritual spells to bring the figures to life. The average farmer of villager leaves a small figure beneath the oldest tree on their land or in a house specially built for the Alux which is known as the Kahtal Alux. The farmer takes food and drinks to the spirit on a daily basis until the clay figurine disappears.

6. The most well known of the Alux myths revolve around the Cancun-Nizuc bridge between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. In the early 90’s when construction began on the bridge the first three attempts to build the structure were disastrous.

What do you think about Public figures especially political figures using social media in this way?

7. According to the story, a Mayan came to the site and told them that they had angered the Alux and he would continue to wreak havoc on the site unless they built him a shelter. The construction company engineers decided to call in a Mayan Shaman to assist them. The Shaman carried out a ritual to contact the aluxes to create a pact that would allow construction to continue.

8. The small pyramid and house was built and offered as a gift to the aluxes, and from this point onwards the construction of the bridge could be completed without being tampered with. To this day even the big hotels have houses or shrines to the Aluxes if you cóme on vacation just ask your friendly staff members and they will know where to find it though they don’t often talk about it.

9. “If you believe this, you are stupid,” one user responded to his post, while another added: “It’s so easy to Google a photo to see if it’s true or not.”Mr López Obrador has long expressed reverence for indigenous cultures and beliefs. His former environment minister also drew derision in the past for saying she believed in aluxes.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Despite Lopez Obrador saying the photo of the creature was taken days ago by an engineer, the same photo appears to have been circulating on social media since at least 2021

Let’s imagine that there is such a mythological creature if it were to be discovered, what would the reaction be?
